Calangianus is well-known for cork manufacturing, which made it one of the richest towns of Sardinia: in 1979, it ranked as one of the one hundred most industrialised municipalities in Italy. The old town is a crisscross of alleys overlooked by bare granite buildings. The town is extremely old, as it already existed in the Middle Ages. Starting in the 19th century, a wealthy local entrepreneur launched cork extraction, harvesting, and manufacturing to make stoppers and several products for the building industry. This activity is still the town’s core business with a significant development at the industrial level: it is no coincidence that Calangianus has been honoured with the title of ‘Italian capital of cork’.
