What is a stazzo?
The stazzo, which came into existence around 1600-1700, was the home of Gallura families. This was a country dwelling equipped with animals, vegetable garden and vineyards for the on-site production of all needs, which has long been the most typical rural settlement in the area. They could arise in isolation, or clustered around country churches to help support the needy who came to them. Gallura is still full of old stazzi, but of course now their uses have changed: some have been turned into elegant private residences, others into B&Bs or agritourisms.
