Livestock farming in Gallura is mostly sedentary and focuses on bovines, goats, and pigs. On the other hand, in the area of Monte Acuto, sheep, goats, and pigs are mainly kept according to the practice of transhumance. Here, livestock farming is one of the main local sources of income among pristine pastures with typical Mediterranean plants. Some of the tastiest typical products originate from livestock farming: cheese, cured meats, and meat. Pigs occupied a place of honour in Gallura’s rural civilisation: their slaughtering was a convivial event involving not only family members, but also friends and more distant relatives, according to the value of sharing typical of the local culture.
