What are nuraghi and what were they used for?
Between 1700 and 1800 B.C., these stone buildings called “nuraghi” were built in Sardinia, with walls up to 4 meters wide. Some were two or more stories, with circular chambers stacked on top of each other. These were real fortifications, with a central tower and others around it, surrounded by city walls. Nuraghi were built along the coastline of the island, near landings and mouths of rivers and streams-the natural routes into the interior of the country. They were erected on hilltops, defending pastures, in strategic positions for controlling the territory. In fact, they were like “fortified farms” that, in addition to guarding the territory, served as warehouses for stacking food resources.
