SANTO STEFANO ROCK ALTAR

OSCHIRI

A granite sculpture of about 10 metres in length stands out in the countryside around Oschiri, halfway between Sassari and Olbia and surrounded by surreal silence and enchanting nature: a series of geometric shapes were engraved on it. This stone sculpture was described as a ‘rock altar’ because it is located in front of the church of Santo Stefano, after which the site is named. Nearby, in a thicket of Mediterranean scrub, lies a necropolis comprised of eight domus de Janas; all around, you will see rocks serving as alcoves: here, you will struggle to distinguish between the hand of man and that of nature.

An unsolved enigma in front of a prehistoric sculpture, immersed in a completely peaceful oasis.
