The Balaiana Castle<\/strong> is named after the area where it was built, home to the Balares, an ancient Sardinian tribe who presumably settled in Gallura before the Roman occupation. The building enjoys a privileged position and offers a wonderful panoramic view<\/strong> stretching until Corsica.
\nTo reach it, you need to climb a staircase with a difference in height of about 100 metres; however, your efforts will be amply rewarded by the landscape. The original appearance of the castle has been substantially altered due to significant renovation works, made necessary by the degradation of the building. Its distinctive trait lies in the construction technique employed: the fortification was built entirely of granite, without mortar or lime. A short distance away lies the church of San Leonardo, which originally served as the castle chapel and offers a very rare example of Romanic architecture in Gallura.<\/p>\n
