Luogosanto<\/a> was established by Franciscan friars<\/strong> and is known as the \u2018holy town\u2019 due to the presence of more than 20 sanctuaries. One of the first Franciscan monasteries was built here when Saint Francis of Assisi was still alive. According to the legend, the cathedral of Nostra Signora di Luogosanto<\/a> was erected in the place where the Virgin Mary appeared and showed some friars the way to find the relics of two saints: Nicola and Trano. Another spiritual, panoramic destination is the Eremo di San Trano,<\/a> a sanctuary rising on a hilltop in the area of Luogosanto. This place of worship was built around a cave where Saint Nicola and Saint Trano, two hermits, found shelter between the 4th and the 5 th century: it is a pilgrimage destination and a symbol of spirituality, and it offers a chance to admire a wonderful view of the Strait of Bonifacio.<\/p>\n
