Some were two or more stories, with circular chambers stacked on top of each other. These were real fortifications, with a central tower and others around it, surrounded by city walls. Nuraghi were built along the coastline of the island, near landings and mouths of rivers and streams-the natural routes into the interior of the country. They were erected on hilltops, defending pastures, in strategic positions for controlling the territory.
