For centuries, this noble raw material has been precious for the island\u2019s daily routine, as it can be used to manufacture several items that are crucial to survival. From time immemorial, Calangianus, in the province of Olbia-Tempio, has been considered the Italian capital of cork: the inhabitants of this ancient small town, who were mainly shepherds at first, were introduced to the art of cork extraction, manufacturing, and carving by the French.<\/p>\n

In 1851, the first factory entirely reserved for cork production was opened. Since then, the business has constantly developed, and today about 70% of the total cork production of Sardinia occurs in Calangianus.<\/p>\n
