Cork – The Emblem of Gallura

Cork is perhaps the most important of the core pillars of Gallura’s craftsmanship and is certainly the most representative material of the area and the whole of Sardinia.

For centuries, this noble raw material has been precious for the island’s daily routine, as it can be used to manufacture several items that are crucial to survival. From time immemorial, Calangianus, in the province of Olbia-Tempio, has been considered the Italian capital of cork: the inhabitants of this ancient small town, who were mainly shepherds at first, were introduced to the art of cork extraction, manufacturing, and carving by the French.

In 1851, the first factory entirely reserved for cork production was opened. Since then, the business has constantly developed, and today about 70% of the total cork production of Sardinia occurs in Calangianus.
