CATHEDRAL OF SAN SIMPLICIO

The church, built outside the old town walls, was located in the suburbs until the expansion phase of the urban centre. The building – characterised by a Pisan style with Lombard influences – dates back to the second half of the 11th century and is almost entirely made of granite. The celebration of St. Simplicius takes place on 15th May and is a public holiday in this town.
Under the cathedral of San Simplicio lies a necropolis, which bears witness to the spread of Christianity throughout the island. Tombs, grave goods, and wall ruins spanning 1,700 years: a wonderful must-see attraction!

The cathedral, which stands on the ancient Punic-Roman necropolis, is currently in the town’s centre.
