GARIBALDINE COMPENDIUM

The island of Caprera is part of the archipelago of La Maddalena and hosts the Compendio Garibaldino, the national museum comprised of the buildings erected from 1849 onwards on Giuseppe Garibaldi’s orders. For instance, the so-called ‘Casa Bianca’ (‘White House’) – made of granite – was built by Garibaldi to welcome his whole family. From the central yard, overlooked by the dwelling buildings, a narrow path leads to a small family graveyard. In 1867, Garibaldi planted a stone pine in the inner garden to celebrate the birth of his daughter, Clelia: today, the so-called ‘Clelia’s pine’ is a monumental tree.

The complex is surrounded by a particularly evocative landscape thanks to its closeness to the sea, with granitic rocks surfacing and typical Mediterranean vegetation.
