FORTRESS OF MOUNT ALTURA

PALAU

Monte Altura served primarily against ships, and the heavy artillery inside the building ensured a very advanced defence for the time. Any enemies needed to be sighted without the guards being seen in turn. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding environment, engineers designed a project which is still fascinating and exciting for its simplicity and logistics: the result is a perfect mix between the evergreen Mediterranean scrub, the rocks naturally emerging from the walls, and the construction of the system itself, built of local stone in order to make it blend even more with the typical moonscape of Gallura.

This fortified citadel was built in 1887 to monitor and protect the northeastern coast of Sardinia.
