The Little Mermaid by Disney – Gallura in Cinema!

The Little Mermaid, an amazing live-action remake of the classic animation film by Disney which won two Academy Awards, was released in cinemas on 24 th May 2023. ‘We did not only want pristine beaches, but also a rocky landscape, cliffs, and a bit of drama’, reveal the producer and director Rob Marshall and the scenographer John Myhre.

The production team opted for Sardinia, in particular the area of Gallura. ‘Sardinia had it all. Crystal-clear sea, dramatic coastline, steep cliffs, castles, wide beaches, and country roads’, explains Marshall.

Among the filming locations selected in Gallura, we can find Cala Moresca (Golfo Aranci), a beach on the northeastern coast with a fishing pier, and a cove, where the scenes set in the fishing village and around the castle pier were shot. The shore of Rena Majore (Aglientu) was chosen as the set for Ariel’s beach: this was the filming location for the iconic scenes where Ariel saves Eric and surfaces to get on the rock. Finally, the scenes of Ariel and Eric’s carriage ride were shot on the jagged coastline of Rena Di Matteu (Aglientu).
